Tensioning a Slackline – Systems, Lengths and What You Need to Know
A slackline is only as good as its tensioning system. Whether you want to rig a relaxed park line or a 200 m longline – the right system makes the difference between fun and frustration.
1. The ratchet – the classic for short lines
The long-handle ratchet is the simplest and most common tensioning system. It works like a rack: thread it once, pull with the long lever – done.
Suitable for: lines up to approx. 25–30 m
Advantages:
- Easy to use
- Inexpensive
- No prior knowledge needed
Disadvantages:
- Limited tension
- Releasing via the ratchet can be dangerous – always slowly and in a controlled way
Our long-handle ratchet has double pawls and built-in spacers for 25 mm and 35 mm webbing – no extra accessories needed.
Important when releasing: Never simply let go of the ratchet lever – the webbing snaps back and can cause injuries. Release slowly and in a controlled way using the release function.
2. The webbing pulley – for medium lines
A webbing pulley (also called Ellington) multiplies the force you apply. The principle: the webbing is routed several times through pulleys, so you can create a lot of tension with little force.
Suitable for: lines from 20 m to approx. 80 m
Advantages:
- More tension than is possible with a ratchet
- Gentler release via the soft release
- No abrupt letting go

3. The rope pulley – for longlines
For long lines from 50 m, you need a rope pulley system – usually a 5:1 or 7:1 system with pulleys and a rope clamp.
The principle: the rope is routed several times through pulleys, and a rope clamp prevents it from slipping back.
Suitable for: lines from 50 m up to the kilometre range

- Mobile Simple / Orbiter M – light pulley, 30 kN, ball-bearing
- Roll n Lock – rope clamp as progress capture for 5:1 pulleys
- Oval quick link 8 mm – for building pulley systems
- Delta quick link 10 mm – for connecting to the linelocker
4. The soft release – releasing without stress
A soft release is a length of webbing wrapped multiple times that is installed between the pulley and the anchor point. When the tension needs to be released slowly, you let the soft release go in a controlled way – instead of opening the pulley abruptly.
Especially important for: long lines, highlines, waterlines

5. The right length – a rough overview

6. How tight should the line be?
This is a common question – and the answer depends on the discipline:
Lowline / park line: The webbing may sag slightly in the middle – it should not touch the ground when you stand on it. Too tight = too much vibration, too loose = hard to control.
Trickline: Tightly tensioned, little sag – for maximum bounce and control when jumping.
Longline: Very tightly tensioned – the longer the line, the more tension is needed to minimise sag.
